Behind The Scenes: Secret Beach

When viewing nature and landscape scenes, the viewer sees one moment frozen in time. Often they want to know more. They might well be wondering what the whole area looked like, rather than what fit into the confines of the framed artwork. They might also be wondering 'is that what it really looked like’? I thought that an intermittent series of posts, which I will call ‘Behind The Scenes’, might provide some insight into those questions.

First, my own philosophy, and, I believe, the philosophy of most artists is that when it comes to artwork (as opposed to, say, photojournalism) anything goes. I consider the photographic arts as similar to painting. I mean that in the sense that a photographer can interpret a scene in that much the same way as a painter might interpret what’s before him when he puts brush to canvas. This interpretive process is meant to not only transmit what a location looked like, but, also, what it felt like to be there. That said, there are also some images that come very close to looking like the actual scene.

Here we have my piece entitled “Secret Beach” (yes, that is the actual name of the location).

In this particular case, the finished artwork is not too dissimilar to the actual scene, but better represents what it felt like being there, especially as the sun rose and illuminated the area. In regards to the question of what the whole location looked like, I offer a quick cell phone video of Secret Beach that I took before I got down to more serious image making!

“Secret Beach” is one of the pieces in “The Sea” category and it transmits a feeling of calm introspection.
